H2O2 is the chemical formulation of Hydrogen Peroxide, a clear, virtually colourless liquid which is slightly more viscous than water and has a wide range of uses.

H2O2 is a strong oxidizing agent and has excellent disinfectant and antiseptic properties. H2O2 is widely used in hospitals and by veterinary practices where it is used to treat wounds and as an antiseptic. When mixed with Propan-2-ol it becomes an effective cleaning agent and disinfectant for hard surfaces such as those found in hospitals.

H2O2 or Hydrogen Peroxide is also widely used in the manufacture of paper pulp as it enables the wood pulp to bleach and become white. This same feature is the reason why Hydrogen Peroxide is commonly used in hairdressing – it enables hair to become ‘bleached’ by removing the colour from the hair. Indeed, Hydrogen Peroxide has been used in this manner by hairdressers for so many years that the expressions ‘bleached blonde’ and ‘peroxide blonde’ have entered the common language. When used in this way, the solution of Hydrogen Peroxide is usually of about 2% to 3%.

h2o2Even in dilute solutions, Hydrogen Peroxide can cause serious burns to soft tissue including the eyes and skin so care should always be taken when using or handling the substance. H2O2 should only be used by competent persons who are thoroughly familiar with the potential hazards of the substance and actions to take in the event of an emergency. This information is detailed on the Safety Data Sheets which should be read and understood before commencing tasks using Hydrogen Peroxide.

Full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should always be used when handling H2O2 including approved eye protection in the form of safety goggles or glasses, protective clothing, safety shoes or boots and gloves which are compatible with the substance (always consult the glove manufacturer before use). When handling large quantities of concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide, full length gauntlets and a face shield should be worn and the procedure should be carried out under fume extraction or in a well ventilated area.

Inhalation of Hydrogen Peroxide is harmful and can cause damage to the respiratory tract and digestive system. Ingestion of Hydrogen Peroxide causes severe damage to the throat, mouth, oesophagus and digestive tract and the patient should wash the mouth with plenty of water and seek immediate medical advice. Do not induce vomiting.
